THE Surf Report

It must be spring.

SURF:
Not really stormy, not really warm, it must be spring. We had windy/cloudy conditions earlier in the week, then some nice weather on Wednesday, and back to low clouds and fog in the nights and mornings today. Definitely spring.
Today we have mainly NW windswell with tiny SE swell underneath. Spots around town are chest high with an occasional better set in SD. That NW peaks today but tomorrow we're due for more S swell. Nothing big as it's from a pretty S angle, but best spots in far north county SD and the OC will have some chest high waves. Fear not SD, late Sunday we get some NW windswell again for chest high sets. All in all some little waves this weekend to ride. And your typical night and morning low clouds and fog. Must be spring!
Tides the next few days 0' at sunrise, 4' at lunch, and down to 1' at 5pm. Water temps are holding at 58. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves/weather at Twitter/North County Surf.

FORECAST:

After the little waves this weekend, we get a couple solid boosts from the NW and SW- but also a little weather. Typical. First up is the NW windswell that will be building on Sunday- that peaks on Monday for shoulder high waves in SD but we'll also have a little wind and maybe showers from a weak cold front passing through. By Tuesday we have a good S swell showing up for the OC for overhead sets. We'll also get some shoulder high waves from it here in north county SD. Could have been better but it formed just outside of our swell window- next to South America- so we'll only get a glancing blow.
After that it's looking pretty small out of the northern hemisphere so don't expect any NW windswell late in the week.
There's a little storm on the charts that may form off South America again this weekend and if it holds, we'll get chest high waves around here next weekend.
And the charts show yet another storm forming off South America a few days later- which means we may get some more chest high SW around the 23rd. Ideally I'd like both of these storms to form way over towards New Zealand- not at the end of our swell window off South America- but beggars can't be choosers.

WEATHER:

As advertised above- typical spring weather this weekend with night and morning low clouds at the beaches. Should have temps though in the mid to high 60's and hazy afternoon sunshine so it's not all that bad. There's also a storm moving through the interior western states on Sunday and we'll get a glancing blow from it- just clouds late in the day on Sunday with a small chance of showers and breezy conditions on Monday. By Tuesday we get back to normal and the 2nd half of the week looks nice as high pressure sets up.

BEST BET:
Tough call here- lots of swell Monday/Tuesday but some breezy conditions on Monday. Maybe early Tuesday morning once the weak cold front blows through?

NEWS OF THE WEEK:
Alright- last report I do on rainfall this season. I'm basically closing the book on the lack of rain we've had this year. Sure, April showers bring May flowers, but I'm not expecting any real April showers this month. So how did we do this year? The year that was supposed to be an El Nino year? Downright awful. Here's where we stand:
  • Los Angeles: Normal for the year is 12.82 inches. They've received 6.44 inches. Just about 1/2 of normal.
  • Newport Beach: Normal for the year is 13.30 inches. They've received 4.70 inches. About 1/3 of normal.
  • Oceanside: Normal for the year is 13.66 inches. They've received 5.58 inches. About 2/5 of normal.
  • San Diego: Normal for the year is 10.34 inches. They've received 6.23 inches. About 3/5 of normal.
Long story short, we continue to be in a drought. Good news is that some reports say El Ninos tend to sputter before they kick into gear. Hopefully this was a season where it sputtered and next winter we'll be rocking and rolling.

BEST OF THE BLOG:

My man crush on Australia is no secret. Heaps of good surf, a raucous night life, plenty of Shelia's, and more surf characters than you can shake a didgeridoo at. This week on the North County Surf blog, we've got clips of Freestone, Wilko, Mick, Dion, and Men at Work. Yes, Men at Work. C'mon, admit you want to rock a little Land Down Under right now. Check it out on the blog as well as a mid-week Surf Check AND an in-depth THE Surf Report; all of that and more in the blog below!

PIC OF THE WEEK:

I've got a couple buddies going to Tavarua this weekend. Lucky stiffs. But you know it isn't so bad around here. Sure we've got crowds, south wind, and cold water, but sometimes, just sometimes, you find a little nugget to yourself. God bless the Golden State.

Keep Surfing,
