THE Surf Report

Squeezing The 2 Last Weeks Of Winter Into 2 Days.

SURF:

My arms are literally wet noodles from all the paddling this past week. I'm exhausted.

That was one heck of a good run of waves & weather. Alas, all good things must come to an end (in the near term at least) and as you probably noticed today, we have a storm headed our way- just in time for the end of winter. Look for rain to start after midnight and the SW winds to pick up too. For most of the weekend, we'll have stormy surf and dirty water. And here's the tides, sun, and water temps for the next few days:
  • Sunrise and sunset:
    • 6:10 AM sunrise
    • 5:50 PM sunset
  • Water temps are a chilly 58 degrees. AND... there's a slight red tide at some beaches- beware your sinuses!
  • And tides are pretty simple this weekend:
    • around 0.5' at sunrise
    • 3.5' mid-day
    • 1' at sunset
FORECAST:

After the storm cleans up on Sunday, surf is looking pretty small to start the week. We start to see more NW windswell late on Wednesday and peaking Thursday for shoulder high+ surf. BUT... models haven't determined yet if the weather will cooperate.

Late in the week, forecast charts show some fun chest high SW arriving towards Friday. It looked more promising last week, but the models have since backed off- but I can't complain about rideable surf.

After that, we may see solid NW for well overhead surf next Sunday the 14th and the EBS could be activated.

We may also see a slightly better SW swell around Monday the 15th for shoulder high sets- and along with the NW, could be good. In summary- bad this weekend, slow to start the week, and better the 2nd half of next week!

WEATHER:

Solid storm is headed our way tonight and will help our drought (slightly- more on that below). Look for rain to start overnight and taper off Friday night. Winds will be gusty and the surf will be a mess. A slightly smaller storm will arrive Saturday for showers and breezy conditions. After the storms blow through, I'm hoping we see at least 3/4" of rain. Next week SHOULD clear up but models aren't 100% sure. If anything changes between now and then, make sure to follow North County Surf on Twitter!

BEST BET:

Wednesday/Thursday with fun combo swell or SundayMonday the 14th/15th for better combo swell.

NEWS OF THE WEEK:

Good to see rain off and on the past few weeks but is it making a dent in our drought? Let's have a look:
  • Newport Beach: 5.75" so far (8.79" is normal). Just 65% of where we should be. For comparison's sake, we only had 3.23" at this time last year. So... yippee?
  • Oceanside: 5.81" so far (8.85" is normal). Just 66% of where we should be. For comparison's sake, we only had 3.31" at this time last year.
  • San Diego: 4.45" so far (7.27" is normal). Just 61% of where we should be. For comparison's sake, we we only had 2.88" at this time last year.
As you can see, we're way behind where we should be at this point in the year for our rain totals. And now that the rainy season is winding down (April showers is all we can hope for), we're in a bad spot again unfortunately. If we get 3/4" of rain this weekend, that would put us around 70-75% of normal. By the end of the season (September 30th for us), our normal is usually 10" or rain. At this point in time, we may only end up at 7" or 7.5"- still well below where we need to be. In the long term, desalination plants will help with our household water needs, but they won't help our wildfire risk.

BEST OF THE BLOG:

It's been a long time coming- but worth the wait. It's official: The North County Board Meeting is having it's annual-ish charity golf event, sponsored by Venture LLP, on Friday, May 13th! Being held at the challenging but friendly Goat Hill Park in Oceanside, we'll be raising funds to benefit local charities again. As in year's past, we'll most likely sell out and spots are limited to play or sponsor a hole- so sign up ASAP! And since this is a charitable event, we hope you understand that it’s ‘1st come, 1st serve’; we can't hold sports or take IOU's! To reserve your spot or hole sponsorship, either:
  • Make a check payable to North County Board Meeting and send to Alliance Multimedia, 2033 San Elijo Ave #230, Cardiff, CA 92007 or...
  • Contact Rich Clark at Fuzion Payments for credit card payment at rclark@fuzionpayments.com
Cost is just $100 to play and includes lunch. And hole sponsorship is only $200 and is a great way to bring awareness of your company to the local community. And besides playing or sponsoring a hole, there are other ways you can help; we are also looking for raffle prizes and goodies for the swag bags. If you’d like to assist or have any other questions, please reach out to Michael at northcountyboardmeeting@gmail.com. Thanks for the support and we’ll see you on May 13th!
