The Circus is in Town! Welcome ASP to SD!
Seems like every 10 years or so, north county SD goes through a resurgence of pros who make it their home. From the 80's with Barr/Buran/Lambresi to the 90's with Knox/Machado/Gerr to now with Kerr/Jordy/Damo all living here (with a guest appearance by Julian). So with the ASP World Tour making it's annual appearance at Lowers this weekend, I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the forecast and favorites.
The contest doesn't officially start until Sunday the 15th (the state park system worked out a deal with the locals years ago in which 1 weekend day has to be left open- good call). So we've got fun SW filling in today with head high waves at Lowers and the odd overhead set tomorrow. By Saturday it's going to start winding down and by Sunday the 15th, there will just be leftover chest to shoulder high sets.
Luckily there was another small storm that set up shop right behind our current swell and we should get more chest to shoulder high surf at Lowers the 1st part of next week. Nothing bombing like the 2002 contest swell, but still contestable.
And we've got another storm on the charts taking shape which should give Lowers some chest high+ surf towards the middle of next week. All in all some fun waves at Lowers all week but nothing big.
With that said, who's the favorites? Let's be honest- everyone is. Who ever would have picked Adrian Buchan to win Teahupoo last month and who ever thought Bede Durbidge would make the finals at Lowers a few years ago in average surf?! The typical names like Kelly, Parko, and Mick will pop up due to their experience but what about surfers we really want to see like Jordy, Julian, and John John? I'd include Dane in the conversation but he hurt his wrist last week and I don't think he'll be pushing it 100% unfortunately.
With a win here, Jordy gets back in the race, John John has momentum again after his injury, and Julian is due damnit!
Of course as history has shown us, someone like Alejo, Kieren, or Travis will prove me wrong and win the whole darn thing. That's why I don't play the lottery or bet on football- it's impossible to predict the future. Make sure to watch the event next week on your laptop, tablet, phone, or smart TV here.
