North County Business News: From SF to K5
There's been a lot of activity recently on El Camino Real in Encinitas. Wal Mart and Chic-Fil-A just went in, Buffalo Wild Wings is coming, and there's a couple other items on the radar- specifically the Camino Village Plaza shopping center.
First up is the former Red Robin/Boston's restaurant location. The landlord is actually splitting the building in two- the back half is going to be a Mission Federal Credit Union. And the front half is going to be a Boudin's Bakery. Not familiar with Boudin's? It's basically the best sourdough bread this side of San Francisco. Baking since 1849, they've now branched out to bakery/sandwich shops along the likes of Panera and Corner Bakery. That is totally awesome. Rumor has it they were aiming for a February 20th opening but they're still working on the guts of the building. I'm thinking it's going to be March 21st- right in time for the 1st day of spring.
That's the good news in the Camino Village Plaza. The bad news? One of the last great surf shops is closing up after 25 years of serving north county San Diego- K5. It's no surprise the surf industry has been struggling the last few years- from the death of Andy Irons to Bob McKnight being asked to step down at Quiksilver, it's not the good ol' days anymore. A casualty of the 'new' surf industry is 'mom and pop' shops like K5 closing down and stores like Target sponsoring surfers. It's just not the same.
Longtime owner Jurgen Schulz is having a sale until 2/24 at the Encinitas store, so make sure you go down this weekend and show your support. And while you're at it, don't forgot to show some love for Encinitas Surfboards and Surfy Surfy. The last thing we want is Hollister to rule our world!
