Fantastic day out there again. Just cold and flat unfortunately. The morning dawn patrols have been in the mid to high 30's and the water isn't much better at 54 degrees. Actually heard some reports of the High Sierras being in the negative teens this week. Brutal.
Things are looking up for us though as we should only have a couple more chilly nights around here (and less offshore winds unfortunately) as we get towards the end of the week. Looks like some above normal temperatures actually for the weekend- look for the highs to be 70 and the lows 50.
But enough about the cold weather already. Let's talk about the surf! Or lack thereof. After the bombing windswell late last week, the NW swell has been steadily dropping the past few days. Today we have some knee high NW windswell with some waist high sets in SD. Not appealing, especially with the early morning cold air/water temps. That should last into Saturday morning.
But as mentioned above, things are looking up. We have warmer weather headed our way this weekend- as well as some NW groundswell. In the graphic shown above, there's a big storm off Japan today with hurricane force winds and 50' seas spread over a wide area. That's good. Some bad though- the storm is going to fall apart about 1/2 across the Pacific. We still should get some solid overhead WNW late Saturday and peaking Sunday- with south SD getting some 10'+ surf- but it will be inconsistent. And most likely walled unless you surf a point or reef or a beach with a submarine canyon. Can't complain though- it's cold and flat around here today. I'll take inconsistent overhead swell with warmer temps any day.
And before I forget- tides the next few days are 1' at sunrise, up to 4.5' at lunch, and down to 1' again at sunset. Long story short- nothing happening around here the next few days so get your stuff done before Sunday!
