Wavepool Battle! Take 2

I've had various articles on wave pools over the years on the North County Surf Blog. Basically I'm on the 'pro' side of the fence. Yes I know surfing is a sport born by mother nature and there's nothing like being in the ocean by yourself on a stormy day- just you and your thoughts. But even I have to travel inland from time to time (against my better judgment) and the possibility of having a surfing oasis in the middle of the desert

is too good to pass up (check out Dion in Dubai above or my other Clips of the Day from last June). Long story short, if they can make thousands of golf resorts around the world, it's about time they make surf resorts- and I don't mean monopolizing Tavarua. There's too many overcrowded world class surf spots already!

Solution? Wave pools! And I mean GOOD wave pools. Not Big Surf in Tempe, Arizona nor the former Raging Waters in Irvine (remember the epic PSAA battle between Chris Brown and Kelly Slater in the mid-80's? You didn't miss much). And even though Typhoon Lagoon at Disney World Orlando has made a decent attempt at a rideable wave, I'd much rather be standing in line for 2 hours to ride the Matterhorn. But alas- the 11 time world champ Kelly Slater has come to save surfing. Again. Back in October 2011 the North County Surf Blog reported on two companies battling over their wave pool technologies- one by legendary Australian shaper Greg Webber and the other by the Cocoa Beach Kid Kelly. Well it seems as though Kelly's group the Kelly Slater Wave Company has gotten their act together first. There's been a lot of press lately about how their technology works (check out the two circular pool pics above and how the waves go round and round), how resorts should by into this opportunity, how a new home community/amusement park on the Gold Coast of Australia is breaking ground on this new wave pool, blah blah blah- things look like they are finally heating up.

But I also heard this claim on Spain's Wavegarden and the infamous Ron Jon Surfpark and still have seen nothing 10 years later. Long story short, IF the Kelly Slater wave pool technology is built at the Gold Coast development AND it shows a profit, then MAYBE investors here in the states will build one at a resort type destination
(Vegas is overdue- the Mandalay Bay wave is pathetic) and we'll finally have consistent surf around here- heck- even surfing at night. But that's a big IF and I don't think it will happen around here for at least 10 years. Just in time for my kid's kids to get a crack at it.
