THE Surf Report- Early Edition
Rinse and repeat. And repeat.
SURF:
If you liked last week and the week before and the week before that then you're going to love- ah, never mind. Seems like winter is in a rut. Can't complain, lots of fun surf around here, just predictable. Some surf, then some showers, then some great cold weather. Looks like we're due for that again this weekend.
Before I get ahead of myself, we had some great surf the past few days. Albeit a little walled- but some overhead sets early in the week and cold offshores in the morning made for some great conditions. Tomorrow we'll have more of the same. The NW will be holding in the shoulder high set range (bigger in south county SD) and about waist high in the OC. Saturday the NW starts to back off and Sunday looks pretty small around here.
Luckily for us a new NW picks up late in the day- but we have another weak cold front forecasted to come through the area.
Tides the next few days are pretty mellow; about 2' at sunrise, up to 3.5' mid-afternoon, and down to 2' again at sunset. Water temps are still a chilly 58. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves/weather at Twitter/North County Surf.
FORECAST:
After some slow surf on Saturday and Sunday, we get a boost out of the NW late Sunday into early Tuesday. That should be good for overhead sets here and a few feet overhead in SD. The OC should have some shoulder high sets in far north and south part of the county. Unfortunately, there's some showers associated with this swell so Monday looks a little junky.
Things start to clean up towards Tuesday/Wednesday and we're due for another similar sized NW on Thursday into Friday- but more showers are forecasted again. What? You expected different this winter?
WEATHER:
Great weather again on tap for Friday/Saturday then models show clouds increasing on Sunday. They're having a hard time predicting the strength of this one though- I don't think it will be big- but we should have some showers and breezy conditions on Sunday afternoon/Monday. Tuesday/Wednesday look clear and cold again then more showers are predicted late Thursday/Friday.
BEST BET:
Couple options here- some fun surf tomorrow and clean conditions or bigger junkier surf Monday/Thursday.
NEWS OF THE WEEK:
This day in weather history!
-2001: Santa Ana winds blew for 2 straight days. Gusts reached 60 mph at Rialto and 52 mph at Ontario. The Viejas Fire resulted, burning 5,500 acres east of Alpine.
-1995: Heavy rain started on this day and ended on 1/4/1995. The result was flash flooding in Seal Beach, Norco, and Oceanside. A mudslide killed six at La Conchita near Santa Barbara. Six to 12 inches of snow fell in the mountains. Snow also fell in the high desert, with two inches of heavy, wet snow down to 2300 feet.
-1981: It was 71° in Big Bear Lake, the highest temperature on record for January.
-1974: Heavy rain and snow began on this day and ended on 1/5/1974. One drowning death occurred near Temecula. Many highways were closed because of flooding and mud slides. Over 18 inches of snow fell in the San Bernardino Mountains. As a result, structures and a few roofs collapsed due to the weight of snow. Power lines and trees snapped.
-1902: It was 81° in San Diego on this day and again on 1/4/1902, the highest temperature in ALL of 1902; remarkable that it was in January!
BEST OF THE BLOG:
If there's still a lingering recession going on, no one's told the city of Carlsbad as they have 5 new retail projects in the works and 3 of them fairly large. Like the Green Dragon Colonial Village. What?! Check out the North County Surf blog for details. And of course a mid-week Surf Check and an in-depth THE Surf Report - all of that and more in the blog below!
PIC OF THE WEEK:
Tired of the frigid mornings and bone chilling water temps? Here's a shot to warm your cockles. Don't ask me what a cockle is- just paddle out.
