Stop reading this and go surf! (Part 2)
SURF:
Man has it been good lately. Lots of overhead surf and sunny skies. El Nino years may have bigger surf- but also stormier weather. Our current La Nina has given us fun waves and clean conditions. Can’t beat that. We had new W swell yesterday for overhead sets and great conditions and today we’ve got some leftover head high sets with a couple overhead sets in south county SD.
Even though the swell has dropped, there’s still plenty of fun waves out there this morning. As luck would have it, we’ve got another WNW swell lining up for tomorrow afternoon. Nothing big, probably head high sets in north county SD/OC, an overhead set in south county SD, and some chest high waves in south OC. Along with another light Santa Ana condition (i.e. light offshores in the OC and calm winds in SD), tomorrow afternoon through Sunday should be worth it for a surf.
Tides the next few days are 5’ at sunrise, just under 0’ after lunch, and up slightly to 2.5’ at sunset. Water temps are still mid to high 50’s and will stay that way until at least late March. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves and weather at Twitter/North County Surf.
FORECAST:
After a fun weekend of surf, we get a solid swell late Tuesday from an odd storm that will go parallel to our coast but not come ashore until it hits Baja on Wednesday. So the resulting swell will be pretty W. Look for overhead surf in north county SD/OC by Wednesday morning, maybe a 10’ set in south county SD, and some head high waves in south OC. That odd storm may spin up some clouds on Wednesday but it shouldn’t do much to mess up our conditions. By Friday the surf is small but charts show more NW for next weekend. I’m going to be exhausted by then…
WEATHER:
More great weather on tap. La Nina is in full control. Look for light offshores and temps in the mid 70’s today and into tomorrow. Sunday/Monday is mild with light and variable winds with temps in the high 60’s. And as mentioned above, there’s a small storm that will sit off our coast Tuesday and move inland to Baja on Wednesday. At this point it looks like the rain will stay in Baja but keep up to date on Twitter/North County Surf or the blog below for the latest. After that small nuance moves through mid-week, look for high pressure to build again for great weather late in the week into next weekend.
BEST BET:
As long as that weird storm doesn’t mess anything up next week, that new swell on Wednesday should be the call. NEWS OF THE WEEK:
Interesting article from the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper this week. This summer the San Diego Association of Governments plans to do some beach sand replenishing and the Surfrider Foundation is being proactive on where the sand should be dumped. Sand of course creates sandbars or filters into reefs to make a wave smoother so where all the sand replenishment goes could mean great A-frames at your local break or a complete closeout. Surfrider is going to track the sand movement with cameras to monitor the effects. 6 new cameras will be in place- Imperial Beach near the pier, Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, Seaside Reef at the boundary of Solana Beach and Encinitas, Cardiff Reef in Encinitas, Moonlight Beach at D Street in Encinitas, and Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad. The footage will be analyzed by CoastalCOMS, a company that specializes in video-based monitoring. The plan is to create a long-term video archive, assess changes in beach width and shoreline position, and track any changes in surf quality and “surfability.” If all goes according to plan, maybe we can get the sand just right so we can create our own version of the Gold Coast’s ‘Superbank’. Read more of the story here at the Untion Tribune.

PIC OF THE WEEK:
Even though this shot wasn’t taken recently, it looks like it could have been anytime during the past 2 months here in California. With all the great surf and weather we’ve had, the points up and down the coast have been as good as it gets. Now I won’t tell you where this picture was taken, but I can give you a couple hints: Al Merrick makes surfboards here and Tom Curren has been known to frequent this line-up. And oh!- it’s in Santa Barbara! And it starts with an R! And it’s super crowded and you can see it from the freeway. Give up? Not going to tell you. Good luck finding it. To see more classic California pics, check out the Stormrider book series and some of Rob Gilley’s shots here.
