THE Surf Report 4/27/12

Back on track.

SURF:
Not much surf this week. And then the weak storm Wednesday really messed up any kind of SW or NW that was out there. Today we have some leftover NW windswell junk from the departing storm yesterday.
Waves around town are waist high with chest high sets the farther you go towards south SD. There is also some building SW underneath it. Wind this morning is calm to lightly out of the W. For tomorrow the NW continues to build while the SW does the same. With the weather continuing to clean up too, we should have a fun surf day with shoulder high sets most everywhere. That holds into Sunday. And water temps have finally hit 60! Break out the trunks! Or at least the 3/2 fullsuit.
Tides this weekend around 0' at 8am and medium the rest of the day.  Make sure to keep up to date on the waves and weather this weekend at Twitter/North County Surf!

FORECAST:
After the fun surf weekend, the surf keeps rolling. We have s slight reinforcement out of the SW Monday afternoon and some NW windswell building off Point Conception Tuesday. Both those swells last until Wednesday.

For the 2nd half of the week and into the weekend it's looking pretty small so get it now! There's some more storm activity in the southern hemisphere forecasted towards Monday but the swell angle is pretty south so we may just get some waist to chest high surf from it around the 7th of May- a long ways off.

WEATHER:

Now that the rain is over for the season (I'm guessing), we should be getting back on track with seasonal spring weather. Today and Saturday will have the best weather with the least amount of low clouds/fog and temps in the high 60's. Then the low clouds/fog become more extensive next week for temps in the low to mid-60's. Nothing out of the ordinary for spring.

BEST BET:
Saturday AND Sunday. Both days have fun NW/SW swell combo but the weather might be slightly better on Saturday. But even then there might not be much of a difference. Finally a weekend with waves AND good weather...

NEWS OF THE WEEK:
This is the last time I'll talk about seasonal rainfall totals! Or at least for this season...
So what happened with the storm on Wednesday. Charts 10 days ago originally had it coming in last weekend. Then it got pushed back to Wednesday morning. And then Wednesday afternoon. And finally it came ashore late Wednesday night! Regardless of the delay, coastal spots in the OC received around 1/4" and SD received 1/3". So where does that leave us for the year? I think we're done for the season on any more real rain. Maybe a shower in May but it won't amount to much. So here's the totals I think will stick for the 2011/2012 rainy season:
-John Wayne Airport (inland Newport Beach). 6.31" to date. Only 49% of normal. Total average for the year is 12.76"
-Oceanside Airport (inland north county SD). 8.54" to date. Only 65% of normal. Total average for the year is 13"
-Lindbergh Field (south SD) 8.01" to date. Only 79% of normal. Total average is 10.77"
In a nutshell, early in the season storms took a more southerly track and SD got a little more rain than the OC so they fared better in the totals this year. Unfortunately it looks like we'll end up a little under our average this year but luckily last year most totals were 10"-15" so that helps our current situation. Now that the rain is over, bring on summer and boardshorts!

BEST OF THE BLOG:

New clips from the tropics- take your pick from Teahupoo, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. Or just feel like you're in the tropics with deals on new shades from Dragon, Electric, and Von Zipper.  And of course the mid-week Surf Check and a more in-depth THE Surf Report. All of that and more in the blog below!

PIC OF THE WEEK:

Usually the Pic of the Week is some sort of tropical location with palms lining the beach or a cold water destination with a thick forest in the background. Not this week. In fact, I don't see any living thing in the picture. Just sand bottom lines as far as the eye can see. And probably a ton of white sharks living in the line-up. Awesome. Deal Alert! Sunnies For The Sun!

Now that the rain has officially ended until October (it's not official but that's what I'm claiming after yesterday's weak storm), it's time to put the jackets away and slip on some sunglasses. Found some good deals this week and it won't put a dent in your wallet. Like the Dragon's above from Seshday. The 'Kingpin' is normally $80 but you can get them today for just $29.95. Here's their marketing shtick that will make you want to buy 2: "Look fabulous this season with these great shades. The Dragon Kingpin Sunglasses offers a classic yet stylish look. Made with great quality, this nylon frame will feel ultra lightweight and super comfortable. Protect those eyes from the glaring sun and its harmful UV rays. Look hip while being protected. Now, you're set to hit the town in true style and comfort. "

Features:Key Features of The Dragon Kingpin Sunglasses:
Nylon Frame Material
6.00 Base Curve Polycarbonate Lens
5 Barrel Spring Hinge
100% UV Protection
Or go old school and rock the Dragon GG's by the pool as you listen to Loverboy (my personal Saturday activity). At just $49.95 (that's over 50% off the retail price of $105), you'll look 30 years younger with all the money you saved. Dragon says "After an epic night, throw on the Dragon GG Sunglasses, and make the walk-o-shame. These oversized shades have an 80s-esque rocker look that gives you plenty of coverage to hide your bloodshot eyes. Dragon made the frames out of lightweight propionate material so the GG Sunglasses won't get thrashed, and used 6.0 base curve polycarbonate lenses for distortion-free vision. Get 'em quick as Seshday sells out quick!
Or go against the grain and get some tortoise shell frames frames from Electric. The G-Six shades are $35.98 on Department of Goods (don't ask me why they're $35.98- odd price yet cheap I guess) and they are "even more gangster than Rick Ross’ beard". The Electric G-Six Sunglasses protect your pupils from bad rays and cold glares from the haters. When you go from being a prison guard to being in videos and Bentley’s, you need a fly pair of shades to show the haters you made it. Look no further than the Electric G-Six Sunglasses. A strong durable Grilamid frame, clear as crystal lenses, and five-barrel hinges deliver the strength and performance to see bullets in mid-air (not really) with a look that drives the females wild (possibly).
And if you're on the Von Zipper bandwagon (and I don't blame you, Dono, Taj, and Parko are), then the Southpaw Sunglasses and their uniquely colored frames are right up your alley. 100% UV protection and a wraparound shape make sure the sun doesn’t fry your left eye … or your right. And they're another cheap (yet odd price) of $47.97 at Department of Goods today.

So that's it- solid shades from the top brands of Dragon, Electric, and Von Zipper. Go get 'em!

Clips of the Day: Ways to Waste Your Work Day

A little bit of everything today. If you're caught up at work and looking for something to do, then waste away your day looking at tropical surf videos online. Like grom Conner Lester from the Outer Banks. No tricks out of the ordinary, but the Caribbean right now looks like a good call. Water the color of your pool, wearing trunks when the water temp is in the low 80's, fun little skatepark peaks, and no crowd. After the rain last night, cool day today, and blustery winds, I can use some tropical wedges right now. Or if you want something a little more death defying- check out Billabong's 'Code Red' video from the Teauhpoo contest last year. No matter how many times you watch it, you don't get tired of it. Just more scared

 .
Or wish you were goofing off with Mason Ho as he 'borrows' Carrisa Moore's board and puts it to the test in springtime Hawaii. So that's it. Some Caribbean, Hawaii, and Tahiti to get you jonesing for some tropical surf in an unusually cold spring around here!

Surf Check 4/24/12

Beautiful day but not much surf. Have a little SW in the water for waist high sets. Not looking any better tomorrow as we have a late season storm headed our way. But before I get ahead of myself, let's have a look at today's conditions.
Just some background SW in the water with your best bet to surf far north county SD or the OC. Wind this afternoon is WSW at 10-15 mph. Air temp is 70.

Tides are 0' at sunrise, 3' mid-morning, just down to 2' late in the day, and back to 3' at sunset. Not much of a tide swing all day.
As advertised above, we have a late season storm headed our way. Nothing major but winds of around 20mph from the S early on and switching to NW Thursday morning. Rainfall totals should be around 1/2" at the coast. Snow levels will be high as the storm is already pretty south of us and is picking up warm tropical moisture. There should be a little NW in the water tomorrow along with SW again but if you don't get it at the crack of dawn (and even then the S wind may be blowing already) you may not get any surf until everything cleans up on Friday.
For Friday into the weekend, we had some storm activity in the southern hemisphere and we should see some chest high SW on Saturday. We also have some activity forecasted in the Aleutians this week too which should send shoulder high NW to us on Saturday. With the departing storm Thursday, we should have good weather this weekend for the fun combo swell. Low clouds should try to make a return for Sunday and early next week but nothing out of the ordinary- typical spring weather. Long story short- take a breather the next few days and crack it this weekend for some fun sunny surf.

THE Surf Report

Yawn.

SURF:
Nothing too exciting this week. Mostly small combo NW/SW swell. The OC had a couple inconsistent shoulder high sets yesterday and the fog didn't clear completely from the coast while inland baked- that was about it.
Today the SW is backing off and the low clouds are still hugging the coast while inland hits 90. Typical spring. Look for spots around town to have inconsistent chest high sets from the NW/SW and the low clouds to linger all day. Saturday looks waist high plus and Sunday is about the same. With the low clouds sticking around the beaches today and the lack of real swell, it's going to be a boring weekend in the surf world. Good time to push the groms into some waves. If they don't mind the chilly 58 degree water. When is summer going to get here?

Tides the next few days are 1' at sunrise, 4' mid-morning, down to 1' mid-afternoon, and back to 4' at sunset.  Make sure to keep up to date on the waves and weather this weekend at Twitter/North County Surf.

FORECAST:
After the drab weekend, we start to get increasingly better surf next week. The first few days start off slow then we get a little bump from the SW Tuesday afternoon for shoulder high sets in the OC and chest high waves in north SD. That peaks on Wednesday and is joined by a new chest high NW on Wednesday in north SD and shoulder high sets in south SD.

Charts then show a fun NW taking aim at us next weekend as well as a good SW next weekend too with overhead+ sets in the OC and head high sets in north SD. South SD will have head high sets from the NW. Weather models also show a chance of showers late in the week (but they also showed a chance of showers this weekend too and that didn't materialize so I'm not holding my breath) but the weather bears watching as I'm hoping it doesn't screw up the 2 new swells. Long story short, look for fun little waves mid-week and better surf next weekend.

WEATHER:

It's baking inland and cool and cloudy down at the coast. The deserts are hitting 100 for the first time this year but high pressure is putting a lid on the marine layer and it's keeping the clouds stuck at the coast. The immediate beach will be in the high 60's while just a mile up the road will be mid-70's. That's pretty much the story through early in the week then it cools down mid-week as high pressure backs off and a weak storm approaches towards Thursday. Models hint at showers late in the week but they've been hinting at that for almost 7 days now so I'm not too sold on it. If anything, we should have more clouds and cooler temps.

BEST BET:
Regardless if the weak cold front materializes or not late next week, it shouldn't be strong enough to really disrupt the new NW/SW combo next weekend.

NEWS OF THE WEEK:
Not an exact science here, but if you read the swell charts and you're wondering how long it takes surf from around the globe to arrive to our shores in southern California, here's a rough idea:
-NW swells from the Aleutians usually 2-3 days
-NW or SW swells that hit Hawaii will arrive generally 2 days later
-NW swells that hit northern CA will arrive roughly 1 day later
-NW swells (groundswell or windswell) off Point Conception are usually 6 hours away
-NW swells that hit our offshore islands take around 3-4 hours to filter in to our beaches
-W swells that hit northern CA may only be 12 hours or less out since the swell angle is almost parallel to the CA coast
-SW swells under New Zealand take 7-8 days to hit us
-SW swells that hit Tahiti are about 6-7 days out
-SW swells directly beneath us off Antarctica are usually 7 days out
-S swells from hurricanes towards the equator are 2-3 days out
-S swells from hurricanes off Baja are 2 days out
-S swells from hurricanes off central Baja (which never happen anymore) are 1 day out
Like I said above, this is only a rough guide as waves travel at different speeds due to a variety of factors. But the list above is a good start to gauge your surf time!

North County Business News: Fresh Food vs. Fast Food

The rumor mill is abuzz this week with all kinds of food news. First up is to separate fact from fiction. Encinitas is getting a 2nd Farmers Market which really is the 1st one as it's been in the works for years. But to block off roads/parking lots, getting permits, enough people to help out, etc. is a bit of work so it's taken quite some time to nail down an official starting date.; that looks to be though this Wednesday the 25th of April. The word from the Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association is: "A weekly farmer’s market focusing on local organic farm fresh produce. 'Every Wednesday Rain or Shine'. 4pm-7pm October through April and 5pm-8pm May through September. At Parking lot B 600 s Vulcan Ave, Corner of E and Vulcan. The market is intended to fill the need for a mid week farmers market in Encinitas. DEMA has a long history coordinating farmer’s market but unfortunately the proper location has not been available until now. Carris Rhodes, Program Assistant at DEMA was the lead on the project and is thrilled to introduce a night time farmer’s market to downtown Encinitas. DEMA has been the main coordinator of this farmers market and aims to bolster foot-traffic in the downtown Encinitas district while giving residents more access to fresh, organic local produce. This market will be taking a different angle than most in the county and will have no prepared foods vendors or arts and crafts vendors. The market will focus on specialty food items such as cheeses meats, honey breads and local gourmet organic produce. The market has a strong partnership with Whole Foods Market and the North County Transit District. This will be Encinitas’ second farmers market; it is intended to be a compliment to the Sunday Farmer’s Market coordinated by DEMA’s sister organization, The Leucadia 101 MainStreet. The Leucadia Market is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday at Paul Ecke Elementary on Union Street.
On the other end of the spectrum is 2 fast food joints coming to town (or at least 1 and the other is rumored). Construction on Chick-fil-A has started on the old Baja Fresh location near Encinitas Blvd. and El Camino Real (in the Kohl's shopping center and across from Five Guy's Burgers). It should be open before summer (place your bets: What will be open first- Wal Mart or Chick-fil-A?). So with the addition of Chick-fil-A, I think Encinitas has 1 of every fast food establishment now. Oh- wait- no In-N-Out Burger! Yet...
The original rumor, almost a year to the date, was for In-N-Out Burger to go into the old golf store where the Circuit City mall used to be (now replaced by Big Lots). It hasn't happened yet so the rumor mill has turned it's attention to the Del Taco on Encinitas Blvd. and I-5 Freeway (i.e. behind Oggi's Pizza). It's kind of a Catch-22 rumor; the Del Taco isn't that busy so seeing it go out of business wouldn't shock me. But on the flipside- why would you replace it with another fast food joint? I guess you can argue In-N-Out Burger is no Del Taco. Regardless, I won't believe it until I see a fence go up around Del Taco and the remodelling crews get to work this summer. In the meantime, I'll get some fresh produce at the Farmer's Market and live to see another day.

Surf Check 4/17/12

Small but fun today. We've got a NW/SW combo today for waist high waves with chest high sets. Conditions are clean again and the sun is out- so if you have the time- paddle out! Can't beat a nice spring day with a little bit of rideable surf.

We've got a little bit of a tide swing today with high tide around 8 this morning at 4.5' dropping to 0' at 2pm and back up to 5' at sunset.
Buoys in central CA are starting to pick up slightly today with 10'+ swell up there and we'll see that increase down here tomorrow with shoulder high sets around town and head high sets in south SD. That will last through Thursday. The OC will see some leftover waist high+ SW swell.
For the immediate future, the NW swell tomorrow is about it unfortunately. No real storms in either hemispheres is leaving us pretty barren. This weekend looks to be flat but the weather is forecasted to be amazing.

High pressure is in control for the next 5-6 days and we'll have temps around 70 at the beaches with only a slight chance of morning low clouds and fog. High pressure will strengthen a little bit more Friday/Saturday with temps in the upper 70's at the coast. The nice weather will hopefully make up for the lack of surf in the coming days. Models are hinting at showers early next week but it's a ways off so don't hold your breath.
The southern hemisphere is forecasted to come to life this weekend but that won't give us surf until next weekend (i.e. the 28th of April). There is also another storm forecasted a couple days after that one so hopefully we'll have a string of SW swells for the end of this month and the beginning of May. Until then, it's time for spring cleaning around the house!

THE Surf Report 4/13/12

It feels like Friday the 13th around here.

SURF:
Pretty fun surf this week. Nothing major but a fun little combo SW/NW interrupted Wednesday by showers. Today is a carbon copy of earlier in the week- fun NW/SW swell yesterday is now replaced by scary stormy conditions.
Central CA buoys are picking up quick this morning and tomorrow there will be good NW/SW in the water again but we need today's storm to exit the region quickly tonight. If it lingers, tomorrow morning may have junky NW winds and clearing skies and jumbled NW windswell on top of good SW swell. So it's a tossup of what tomorrow will be like; if you see the skies clearing out tonight, tomorrow morning may be cold and offshore with head high+ NW/SW combo peaks. If not- wait until Sunday when conditions finally clean up. Should be a fun weekend of surf if you can time the conditions right.
Tides the next few days are 3' at sunrise, 0' at lunch, and about 4' at sunset. Water temps are holding in the high50's. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves and weather this weekend at Twitter/North County Surf.

FORECAST:
Once the waves and weather clean up this weekend, we've got nice conditions to start the week and no real surf to speak of. No major storms up north or down south results in small conditions here to start the work week. Models are only showing a small bump from the NW for chest high waves on Wednesday in SD and nothing else.
The southern hemisphere has a solid storm flaring up around the 18th-21st of April but that means we won't get surf until around the 25th- a full 12 days away. I don't know if I can wait that long...

WEATHER:
Got a storm on top of us today and it's bringing breezy conditions, over 1/2" of rain, and cool air temps. We need the rain though and I'm stuck at work, so I can wait out! It just better clear up by the weekend as we have new swells arriving and I want to get my groove on in the line-up. Saturday may be clear and windy while Sunday should be sunny and nice with temps rebounding to the mid-60's. Early next week we have temps hitting the low to mid-70's then high pressure breaks down slightly for a return of low clouds in the nights/mornings and temps back to the high 60's at the coast.

BEST BET:
IF... the storm today can clear out quickly, we MIGHT have clean conditions Saturday for the new NW/SW combo swell. If not, crack it Sunday!

NEWS OF THE WEEK:
You might have heard about the rusted-out, abandoned fishing vessel adrift off British Columbia. The 170 foot  vessel is the Ryou-Un Maru, a squid boat that broke free from a dock in Hokkaido, Japan, after the March 11, 2011 tsunami. Fortunately, no one was on board when the tsunami happened. Over the past year it has drifted across the Pacific Ocean and was first observed in Canadian waters. The U.S. Coast Guard sank the boat on April 5th about 155 nautical miles away from Baranof Island in southeast Alaska.  NOAA reported this week that the drift of the vessel confirms what generations of beach combers have known for a long time. The Pacific Ocean currents form a giant conveyor belt that carries flotsam  across the Pacific. Over the years they’ve found glass fish floats, glass bottles, and other Japanese items that have washed up along the coast of the northwest U.S. But a big fishing vessel—that must be something really unusual—or is it? In 2003, the 97-foot ship Genei Maru #7 caught fire and was abandoned at sea about halfway between Japan and the United States. This “ghost ship” ran aground on Kodiak, Alaska, after drifting at sea, crewless, for five months. And in 2006, the U.S. Coast Guard found an abandoned coal barge adrift off the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska, which had wandered across the Pacific from Russia. But there is evidence that vessels have been drifting across the Pacific for an even  longer time. Some archaeologists think that Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest Coast have been strongly influenced by the effects of foreign shipwrecks. Artifacts from shipwrecks, including metals and other technologies, may have been used by these tribes. One of the oldest record is from 1617, when an abandoned Japanese ship was found near Acapulco, Mexico, but there are likely many other wrecks that went unrecorded because the vessels probably stranded in areas then inhabited only by native tribes. The March 2011 tsunami certainly added to the amount of debris floating across the Pacific. If you find items you think might be from the tsunami, make sure to report them to DisasterDebris@noaa.gov!

BEST OF THE BLOG:
If you haven't seen the worst wave in the world, then check out the blog this week. Hint- some people think it's the best wave in the world but I beg to differ. Also got some polarized shades for under $20 on the blog this week along with Etnies and Globe shoes cheap cheap cheap. And of course the mid-week Surf Check and a more in-depth THE Surf Report. All of that and more in the blog below!

PIC OF THE WEEK:
Why do I love New Zealand? Let me count the ways:
1. Uncrowded line ups.
2. Breathtaking scenery.
3. Lack of kooks.
4. Variety of surf.
5. Friendly people.
6. Lack of kooks.
Numbers 3 and 6 are the biggest reasons.

Deal Alert! Sunnies and Sneakers for Spring!

One of the things I hate the most is spending money on sunglasses and shoes. I usually thrash the heck out of my shoes and shades and they ain't cheap! That is of course unless you read North County Surf Blog and know where to find some deals to save some cash. The crew at Seshday this week are dishing up some Filtrate shades in all sizes and colors for $19.99 to $29.99. Might as well buy 2 'cause you know you're going to lose a pair anyway. And the amazing thing about Filtrate is not only the low prices, they also have polarized lenses to protect your eyeballs. The Zephyr shown above is just $23.99 and comes with:
  • Stainless Steel, high quality, strengthened hinges.
  • 100% UV Protection, with high quality polycarbonate for a more optically correct lens.
  • Polycarbonate lens is light weight and provides high impact resistance.
  • Polarised polycarbonate lenses block out 99% of the polarised light waves, (water, snow and the road), while also blocking 100% of the harmful UV
(UVA UVB & UVC) rays.
  • High quality polycarbonate memory flex injected frames. Filtrate uses only high quality materials in all our frames to survive the good times and the bad.

So now that you have your sight protected, it's time to work on the opposite end of your temple- your feet. Take a gander at the Globe kicks above. Now go to the ATM and grab a $20. Next, purchase these solid shoes for just $19.95. Done. The 'Cheapskate' (clever name, get it?) features a lightweight canvas upper and vulcanized sole to give you the board control you need at a price you can afford. Features Include: Canvas upper with logo details and a rubber toe wrap. Soft textile lining and a padded textile footbed offer cushioned comfort and support all throughout the day. And a rubber outsole with a wavy tread pattern gives great traction and durability.

Globe also has some boardies (under $20) and tees (under $10) on sale so make sure to give those a glance too.

Or if you're gearing up for summer and shoes aren't your thing, then grab some Etnies sandals. The 'Playa' sandal above is just $18.75 (not sure why the weird price but they're good looking, well built, and inexpensive, so who cares). They've got:
  • Leather strap/cork footbed upper
  • Designed by the Malloys
  • Textile, cork or leather lined EVA footbed
  • Heat embossed leather straps with eco-friendly neoprene lining
  • Rubber outsole
Etnies also has some shoes on sale for under $30 so pick your poison! But do it quick as all sales on Seshday don't last forever and when they run out, your out of luck!
