Surf Check 3/6/12

It's the calm before the storm. We've got a slight increase in SW/NW swell today for waist high+ waves and chest high sets in south county SD but the wind is already blowing 10 from the SSW and the tide is really high this morning; about 6' at breakfast, -1' mid-afternoon, and back up to 3' at sunset.

Not looking too good out there. That's the best news I have today unfortunately. We've got a potent storm moving down the coast right now (with a bit of an inland track- so not much rain from it) but we'll have lots of wind tonight into tomorrow morning. Look for gusts in the 30mph+ range from the NW. It will be similar to last week's storm but a little less wind and a little less rain.

Since the storm has somewhat of an inland track, the surf will be more windswell than groundswell and we'll have a couple overhead sets from the NW; if you don't mind getting blown off your board. Once the wind, clouds, and surf blow through tomorrow, we'll have clearing skies and dropping swell. Thursday should be small and clean and Friday looks downright flat but conditions will be nice. We've got some more clouds coming in for the weekend from a weak trough moving by to the north. Nothing exciting except cooler temps and the return of the marine layer- just don't expect beach weather like last weekend. That weak trough kicks up a little waist high+ NW for Sunday.
Monday we get a couple chest high sets from the NW and by Tuesday we have some head high waves with overhead sets in south county SD. Weather should return to normal by then too.
We also have the southern hemisphere coming to life finally. Looks like spring is right around the corner. We've got a storm forming today off Antarctica with 35+ seas. I'm hoping we get some head high+ waves from it by next Tuesday and some overhead sets in the OC. Make sure to keep up to date on the new swells at Twitter/NorthCountySurf!
