THE Surf Report 3/2/12

One or the other.

SURF:
Had some jumbled surf the past few days but there were some little pockets of rideable waves if you could find them. Today we have mainly short period NW windswell with a little bit of groundswell underneath for chest to shoulder high surf.

That will hold through today. Unfortunately the winds are going to start blowing offshore today through Saturday and the swell will disappear with it. Saturday should be waist high with chest high sets in south county SD and Sunday will have great conditions and flat surf. Get it today while you can! All in all a nice weekend but no real waves.

Tides the next few days are 4’ at sunrise, 0’ mid-day and back up to 3’ at sunset. Water temps are still 57.  Make sure to keep up to date on the waves and weather at Twitter/North County Surf.

FORECAST:

After a weekend of small surf, we get a little waist high+ bump from the NW on Monday afternoon. Yawn. Models show a little better swell towards Wednesday (see above) with chest high waves and maybe the odd shoulder high wave in south county SD- but there may be some wet/windy weather associated with it- bummer. Unfortunately there isn’t much out there. Kind of a boring week for surf.

Good news is that the Pacific should start to come to life the second half of the week and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for better NW swell next weekend and maybe some good SW swell towards the 11th of March.

WEATHER:

After the windstorm earlier in the week, we’re left with great conditions today and a building offshore wind event. Temps are forecasted to hit the mid-70’s this weekend. Can’t complain. The winds back off Sunday and we’ve got more great weather holding through Monday. Models show a storm forming towards Tuesday and we may get more wind/rain on Wednesday. Not sure on the exact strength of this one yet. The 2nd half of the week high pressure builds and we should have great weather next weekend- again.

BEST BET:
With no real surf on the charts next week- today is the day- and the weather and conditions are great. Start your weekend early and paddle out!

NEWS OF THE WEEK:
So what does March have in store for our local weather? As I noted a few weeks ago in THE Surf Report, La Nina is finally starting to fade and our temps should get back to normal and rainfall will still be scarce. But what exactly is normal around here? Thanks to the National Weather Service, they shed some light for us…

Temperatures continue to climb in March and the monthly mean of 60 degrees is just 1 degree higher than that of February about 2 degrees higher than January (i.e. it’s still pretty chilly around here). The average daily maximum is just over 66 degrees and the average daily minimum is just above 53 degrees. Not beach weather just yet. The lowest temp on record for March was 36 degrees in 1894 and the highest was 99 in 1879. Occasionally hot dry winds from the interior (i.e. offshore wind events) have caused temps to rise into the 80’s and on 4 days into the 90’s. The last time a maximum temperature of 90 degrees or above occurred was on the 29th of 2005, when the temperature soared to 91 degrees. The new 30 year (1981-2010) rainfall average for March fell to 1.81 inches.  Since 1981, there were 2 occasions when total precipitation exceeded 6 inches in March; they were 1983 (the big El Nino year) and 1991. There was none recorded in 1997. The greatest rainfall in any one March was 7.88 inches in 1867 (that was crazy, I remember it like it was yesterday). As in the two previous months, stormy weather and high winds have been frequent and in 1938 a maximum velocity of 51 mph was recorded. There are 11 clear, 9 partly cloudy, and 11 cloudy days on average and 2 days with heavy fog. Sunshine is 70 percent of the time and relative humidity is about the same as January/February- 74 percent in the mornings, 60 percent in the near noon, and 59 percent in the late afternoon.

So there you have it- your weather forecast 1 month out. Bet your house on it.

BEST OF THE BLOG:

If you believe the White House, then we’re coming out of the recession. Unemployment is down, housing is back in the swing of things (heck- there’s got to be 6 new developments alone in Encinitas and Carlsbad), and retail/restaurant construction is busier than ever. Take a look at the North County Surf blog today and see where the latest Starbucks, Hilton, and Yardhouse? is being planted. Oh- and that new tunnel to Swamis is finally underway. Plus the mid-week Surf Check and an in-depth THE Surf Report and more in the blog below!

PIC OF THE WEEK:

Who says the happiest place on earth is Disneyland?! Standing in line for an hour to ride the Tea Cups makes people giddy?  Or who wants to pay $50 a ticket to look at a bunch of bricks at Legoland?! No sir, my idea of fun is Indoland. Tropical weather, warm water, barrels a plenty, and more Bintangs than you can shake a stick at. Oh- and you’re chauffeured around in yachts. Well worth the 5 grand. Except for that whole malaria/active volcanoes/frothing Aussies thing. Still worth the 5 grand!
