Surf Check

The surf Gods smiled upon us today- more like a wink actually. After a small weekend of surf- then fantastic weather yesterday- we get a little bump today with some funky clouds hugging the coast.

But first let's talk about the surf. Just small background SW the past few days and great weather. If you live in the OC you got a couple little waves but overall Southern California was in a holding pattern. The little SW is hanging around today- albeit inconsistent- and the NW windswell has picked up. We have a weak cold front trying to make it's way through Central California today and in turn it's kicked up our clouds down here and the winds in our outer waters have built a little swell. Not really a barn burner but there are some chest high combo peaks out there and it's rideable.
The weak front that generated this NW windswell has also kicked up some low clouds at the beaches today. Temps are almost 10 degrees cooler than yesterday and the clouds won't completely burn off. Still a nice day- just typical 'May Gray'. Another weak front is forecasted to move through late Thursday and we'll have cooler temps- most likely in the mid-60's- and more low clouds at the beach through Saturday morning. Sunday should be a nice day through early next week as temps rebound to the mid-70's.
The NW windswell will hang around for a couple days then die off by Friday. Luckily charts show some more wind blowing off Central California late in the week and we should have another chest high NW windswell filling in late Saturday and lasting until Monday morning.
The real fun this weekend though is from the SW. Last week there was a good storm brewing that will send us surf late Friday into the weekend. The original forecast charts had this thing looking like a beast but have since backed off. We'll still get head high+ surf around here with overhead+ sets in the OC starting Saturday morning. By Sunday it's in full swing, the sunny weather is supposed to cooperate, and we should have some NW windswell to peak things up. Man I just jinxed it.
Regardless there should be good surf this weekend from the SW. On it's heels another storm formed and we'll continue to get some slightly smaller waves into Tuesday (most likely shoulder high+ in SD county and head high+ in the OC). That storm in particular kept chugging along and should send us SW surf into Thursday. All in all some good surf starting this weekend and into next week- along with some pleasant weather. Going to use up my sick days next week!
And if that wasn't enough- models show the 1st tropical storm trying to come together later this week. It's still early in the season of course- and I never expect hurricane surf in May- but if it does hold together, we may get a shot of small S swell later this weekend- which of course will be overrun with that good SW swell mentioned above. But at least it's a start!
