THE Surf Report

The gift that keeps on giving.

SURF:

BIG surf last weekend (and dirty water) gave way to clean water mid-week but more low clouds and fog- as well as more manageable surf.
We already have new NW swell hitting Point Conception this evening and it will start to build down here tomorrow, peaking with overhead sets Friday night yet again. SD may see the odd 10' set Saturday morning and then things slide into the shoulder high set range for Sunday with an occasional head high set in SD. All in all some fun waves this weekend. And as luck would have it, the weather is cleaning up too (more on that below in the 'Weather' section).
Water temps are a nice 62 degrees and tides the next few days are about 1' at sunrise, up to 3' at 3pm, and down to 2' at sunset (and don't forget to set your clocks ahead Saturday night for Daylight Saving Time. You can now surf after work). Make sure to keep up to date on the waves/weather at Twitter/North County Surf.

FORECAST:
We're in a good pattern right now- we've had lots of surf the past month and there's more coming after this weekend's swell.
Look for head high sets late Monday from a new WNW that peaks on Tuesday.
Charts show another NW headed our way for late in the week and then maybe another NW swell towards late Sunday of next weekend. And the weather should somewhat cooperate too.

WEATHER:

Last weekend's storm has left the region and we've had typical 'spring' conditions the past few days: low clouds and a little sea breeze giving the surf morning sickness. Friday morning will be the same as a low pressure system moves through Northern California and will kick up our clouds down here. But as it exits the west coast, high pressure kicks in behind it this weekend and we'll have beach temps in the mid 70's and sunny skies. Good times. We get another weak front moving through Monday/Tuesday for more low clouds/fog but the 2nd half of next week high pressure kicks in AGAIN and we'll have great weather AGAIN for next weekend.

BEST BET:
Probably tomorrow with the solid surf and clearing weather late in the day.

NEWS OF THE WEEK:

That storm was SOLID this past weekend. We haven't had one like that in a long time. Think I was excited? Darn straight! I live for that stuff. You can only guess what I'm like during an El Nino year: Like a Gudauskas on Red Bull. Now that things are back to normal around here, it's time to reflect on what actually occurred around last weekend:

RAIN TOTALS:
-Yucaipa Ridge (San Bernardino Mountains): 11.11"
-Lake Arrowhead 8.87"
-Julian 5.14"
-Whittier 3.29"
-Costa Mesa 2.88"
-Oceanside 2.42"
-San Diego 1.86"

TOP WIND GUSTS:
-Fremont Canyon (eastern Orange County) 74mph
-Encinitas 57mph
-Camp Pendleton 52mph
-Dana Point 48mph
-downtown San Diego 45mph

So where does that leave us with our drought?
-Newport Beach: 3.32" of rain for the season. Only 30% of normal
-Oceanside: 3.83" of rain for the season. Only 35% of normal
-San Diego: 4.50" of rain for the season. Only 56% of normal

Basically we need a few more of those monster storms before the season ends of June 30th- and I don't see that happening considering spring is 2 weeks away.

PIC OF THE WEEK:

The real Montezuma's Revenge- an empty grinder a loooooong way from here. Enjoy crowded slow Cardiff this weekend!
