Surf Check

Well wasn't that a doozy. Seems like we're back on track for a southern California winter- 70 degrees, sunny skies, and not a drop of rain in sight. The storm that passed through here last weekend gave us a good slap across the face- rain totals of up to 8" in the mountains and wind gusts of 75mph while here at the coast we had 2" of rain and wind speeds of 50mph.

All that rain though made the water dirty from the runoff but it didn't keep anyone out of the line ups as the surf was firing. We had 12'+ surf on Saturday afternoon around here and up to triple overhead at the best SD spots.
It's calmed down since though with just some chest high waves from a peaking SW today and a building NW. The wind has been blowing NW around 10mph most of the day from a weak cold front passing by to the north. Whatever swell we had out there has been kind of junky.
Water temps have been unbelievably nice. If you've been wearing booties this winter than you must like the grip they provide 'cause you sure don't need them for warmth. Temps have been hovering around 62 the past few days which is amazing for early March. Just not a lot of NW wind to cause upwelling and hence, cold water. Tides the next few days are around 0' at sunrise, up to 5.5' at lunch, and down to 0' again at sunset.
As far as our weather goes, the storm has exited and high pressure is setting up. Should be a nice week with temps in the high 60's and warm dry conditions for the weekend with a mild 'Santa Ana' condition pushing temps in the low 70's at the beaches. Just like it's supposed to be around here. Who needs rain?! (That's a joke of course- we live in a desert).

In regards to the building NW mentioned above, we had another good storm form in the Pacific a few days ago which will peak tomorrow with overhead sets here in north county and 10' sets in SD. Not as big as the weekend swell but cleaner and more manageable.
And if that didn't impress you, we have more NW on Friday (slightly smaller in the head high range- overhead in SD) and a similar sized swell for Monday. All in all some good surf the next week with nice weather on tap too.
