THE Surf Report- Early Edition

I can't seem to turn off the Emergency Boardriding System. Oops.

SURF:

I love that we didn't have surf for weeks on end, we finally get some waves the past few days, and everything is now water under the bridge. Nothing like a little surf to wash your troubles away. So on that note, we got more surf coming! I'm just going to leave the Emergency Boardriding System on until the batteries run out. First up, tomorrow we have a little bump from the NW for more chest high+ surf and background SW swell.

Then Hurricane Marie comes back from the dead. Remember Marie back in the summer of 2014? The bomb that us sent 25'+ surf to the Wedge and 8' surf to North County SD? Well, the National Hurricane Center recycles storm names and we get Marie again this week. Not as big as the 2014 storm, but she should peak with 140 mph winds tomorrow and we'll see some chest high+ surf from her late on Saturday and shoulder high waves in the OC. On Sunday, the swell from Marie continues to build with head high sets in far North County SD and overhead sets in the OC.

We also have NW groundswell building late Sunday too. Should be darn fun. And here's the tides, sun, and water info:

  • Sunrise and sunset:
    • 6:45 AM sunrise
    • 6:30 PM sunset

  • And our water temps are slowly heading towards winter- even with our heat wave. Still pleasant though in the mid to high 60's
  • And the tides this weekend may make your session a bit tricky- plan accordingly
    • 3' at breakfast
    • 5' mid-morning
    • 0' late afternoon

FORECAST:

Marie continues to send swell our way for head high surf on Monday and the NW groundswell peaks too. Should be fun peaky waves. By Tuesday, both swells are dropping but we'll still have chest high surf. For Wednesday through Friday, we'll have background waist to chest high SW.

Models then show a couple storms off the Aleutians and Antarctica today which will send us more shoulder high combo swell next weekend. Hope you eat healthy and have been working out- you're going to need it. Make sure to check out Twitter/North County Surf if anything changes between now and then.

BEST BET:

Sunday/Monday with head high Hurricane Marie swell and combo NW groundswell. Or next weekend with shoulder high NW/SW groundswell.

WEATHER:

How you enjoying the heat? I was hoping our heat waves this year were over, but Mother Nature wanted to throw another one our way for good measure. Temps at the beaches today were mid-80's, mid-90's just a few miles inland, and over 100 towards I-15. Luckily for us, we've got a slight cool down coming, but we'll still be slightly above average for most of next week. Looks like fog may start to form tomorrow and we should be back to night/morning low clouds/fog by the weekend. Look for more of the same next week with temps in the mid-70's during the day and low 60's at night. Time to turn off that AC; or in my case, my kids fanning me and wife feeding me grapes.

NEWS OF THE WEEK:

The National Weather Service considers our rainy season not during a calendar year but rather October 1st to September 30th the following year. Makes sense since most of our rainy weather happens in the winter months. Best to look at the measurements as a whole instead of splitting them up. Imagine getting a few big storms during December/January and saying it was part of 2 different periods instead of 1 rainy season? So on that note, our rainy season ended on a high note this week with the following observations:
  • Newport Beach: 12.77". Normal is 13.33". 96% of normal for the season
  • Oceanside: 17.47". Normal is 13.66". 128% of normal for the season
  • San Diego: 13.60". Normal is 10.34". 132% of normal for the season
Not too shabby considering last year was supposed to be an average rainy season. This upcoming season of course is being influenced by La Nina (i.e. above average air temps, below normal rain, and below normal surf) so make sure to keep conserving water as we don't want to get stuck with water restrictions again.

PIC OF THE WEEK:

Oz was firing during the beginning of the pandemic. Now it's our turn. Finally. Make sure to get on it!
