Surf Check 7/6/11

Small scale surf again today from the NW/SW as most beaches see waist high surf. Best SW spots in far SD and OC may see an inconsistent chest high wave. The sea breeze is already blowing at 8mph from the W and will probably peak around 12mph this afternoon. Air temps are a nice 80 degrees.

The good news is that the water is still hovering around 68 degrees and the sun is out with patchy early morning fog nowhere to be found. There's some tropical moisture again surging in the mountains and deserts which will only increase our humidity at the beaches.

Worst case scenario it's a good day to hang out at the beach and push the groms into some whitewater. After a tiny 4th of July weekend, things are looking up. We've got all kinds of activity in the Pacific this week.

First up- the high pressure that's been dominating our amazing weather the past few days will start to get pushed east and we'll have the return of low clouds/fog this weekend which will also kick up some NW winds in our outer waters- that will be good for waist high short period NW swell with chest high sets in south county SD by Friday. On it's heels is some small SW starting to filter in Friday but best by Sunday for chest to shoulder high waves and overhead sets in the OC.
We've even got some tropical activity off of Acapulco this morning. It hasn't formed into a storm yet but it's starting to organize and the warm water and lack of shearing winds will help it's formation over the next 48 hours. Hopefully this one doesn't peter out like it's predecessors and die out before hitting our swell window. If all goes according to plan, we might get some straight S swell the middle of next week.

And if that wasn't enough, the south Pacific is still active and sending more swell our way. We should get more shoulder to overhead surf by the middle of next week with continued nice/typical summer conditions (i.e. morning low clouds/fog burning off to hazy sunshine in the afternoons with temps in the mid 70's.). Looks like the water temp should hang around too in the high 60's. Since the past few days have been pretty meager on the surf front, get your work done asap as the next 7-10 days look pretty fun.
