Surf Check 8/2/11

Great weather again and some small rideable SW/NW today. Looks to be waist high around town and when the inconsistent SW sets arrive and combine with the NW, look for chest high peaks. Our old friend the NW wind has shown up yet again this week and is already blowing 5mph.

With the NW wind and it's upwelling side effects, we're getting water temps in the low 60's- not really what I was hoping for in August. Tides are also messed up- a low -0.5' at sunrise going up to 5.5' at noon, then back down to 1' at 6pm and then up slightly 3' at sunset.

The SW/NW combo hangs around for a couple days and we get a bump from NW windswell starting Thursday- probably waist high. Then we should see a chest high SW show for the weekend starting around Friday. Nothing big but the OC may have shoulder high sets for the US Open extravaganza.

The weather is great again today with temps in the high 70's and tropical clouds floating overhead again. Models show low clouds/fog starting to creep up again into the coast tomorrow and lasting through the weekend. Air temps should float around 75.

And it looks like we finally have a hurricane that will hit our swell window. Currently Hurricane Eugene is under Cabo with winds 100mph and expected to peak at 110mph. Now before you get your hopes up, Hurricane Eugene isn't officially in our window yet- most likely though by tomorrow night. And it's going on a WNW course which is slightly away from us. And when it finally does hit our swell window, winds will only be 100mph and dropping fast. So what does that all mean? Probably chest high sets in far north county SD for Saturday morning and MAYBE a shoulder high set in the OC. Better than nothing. And as luck would have it, there's another area of clouds developing off mainland Mexico today- hopefully that forms into a hurricane by the weekend.
