I love north county but there's nothing like finding some warm water and slipping on some boardshorts this time of year. I'm over 55 degree water- find me some 75 degree water darnit! Two great escapes right now are Cabo and Honolulu- both pick up southern hemi swells and both have air temps in the low 80's and water temps 70-75. AND you can get airfare on Kayak for around $350 to Oahu this month and $400 to Cabo. Take off in the morning and get some warm water ripping in by lunch- why not take a trip? All you need are the essentials. Like the following:
A board bag of course. No way I'm giving those airlines an unprotected stick. Next to my family, my board is my most precious posession. Or is it the other way around. Anyway, Beach Closeouts has the FCS Dual Funboard Bag for just $102 (a savings of almost 25%) to carry a couple boards. Here's what it's equipped with:
- FCS dual board protection bag
- Fits two boards with or without fins
- Durable and long lasting zipper with padded rail protection
- Seperation sheet with internal compression straps
- Air vent at top and bottom
- Padded handles and shoulder strap
- Large FCS logo screenprint
Of course you need a couple boards to stuff in there and Sun Diego has a few on sale. Mayhem's are all the rage with Taj switching alliances and winning the Quik Pro last month, Kolohe riding them since he was a kid (ok- he's still a kid), Julian punting higher than anyone, and just about the 1/2 the ASP top 16 right now. Grab the above 6'0" small wave Round Nose Fish groveller for $500 ($50 off).
Or want to ride something a little more 'real' for solid surf. Like a 6'1" rounded pin from Channel Islands? Sun Diego's got that on sale too for just $530 (normally $620). No guarantees you'll rip like Kelly though. Unless you shave your head of course.
And last but not least- boardies for barrels. And do you want something flashy and expensive or just some well built black trunks to blend in with the locals? Probably best to blend in and go the subdued route. So grab the Volcom 'Armstrong' boardshorts above from Department of Goods for under $20. That's not a typo.
Or add some color, surf like Bruce, and grab the first girl you see on the beach for drinks later. So pony up some spare change and spend $21.98 on the Volcom Horizon boardshort at Department of Goods. That's roughly $100 less than the Hurley Phantom boardshort. Too funny.
So what are you waiting for? Someone to buy you a trip to Tavi? Ain't gonna happen. Grab your board, book a trip to Hawaii, and hit it! You can thank me later.
