Surf Check 6/5/12

Got a nice day on tap. Finally. After the weekend that never was, I'm glad to take sunny skies and cool conditions. BUT... we had a weak cold front move through last night and it brought sprinkles and WSW winds along with it this morning.

Good news is that the clouds are clearing out and we've got a bit of swell from the NW and SW. BUT... the winds blew it out early this morning. No complaints- I'd much rather have surf and wind on it then no surf and great conditions. The current SW swell is dropping but the new NW windswell is building. Look for shoulder high waves most everywhere with a couple head high sets left in the OC. For tomorrow the SW will be waist high+ while south SD will have some shoulder high sets from the NW windswell.
Tides the next few days are -1' at sunrise, 4' mid-day, down to 1' late afternoon, and up to 3' at sunset. Wind is blowing around 12mph from the SW. Water is still hanging in there at 67 degrees. Feels chillier though with all the wind lately. Maybe tomorrow a springsuit will be the call once the sun comes out mid-morning.

Conditions tomorrow should be considerably cleaner too with sunny skies finally. That will last through Thursday then by Friday afternoon we have another weak front moving in for the weekend. Darn it. It won't be as strong as the one yesterday or even Sunday so I'm hoping for at least partial late afternoon clearing at the beaches this weekend.

Back to the surf though. The NW windswell will peak tomorrow and Thursday/Friday look pretty small with no real NW or SW to speak of. In regards to the weak front moving down the coast this weekend, we'll get crummier weather unfortunately but it will kick up the NW windswell again. Look for that to peak Saturday afternoon/Sunday morning with chest high waves in SD.

As far as the tropics go, we had an early start with 2 named storms last month and now it's quiet again down there. And the southern hemisphere hasn't been much better. Kind of a bummer the past 4 weeks. Except for the fun SW yesterday, there really hasn't been any real SW to speak off. And that looks to be the same for at least the next 2 weeks also. There was a good storm under New Zealand a few days ago that will send solid surf to the Volcom Fiji Pro this Friday but most of the south Pacific Islands will block the surf for us. Best case is some chest high sets in the OC middle of next week. Charts though do show a storm forming under New Zealand around the 13th of June but we won't get surf (hopefully) from it until the 20th. Until then, learn to embrace the NW windswell, comfortable water temps, and partly sunny skies!
