THE Surf Report

A for effort.

SURF:
Another beautiful southern California day outside and not much surf.
There's some leftover SW groundswell, S tropical swell, and NW groundswell but only the OC has some inconsistent chest high sets from the S/SW swells. Down here in SD it's only waist high from the NW. The 6' high tide this morning doesn't help either.
Look for smaller conditions tomorrow but we do have some NW groundswell headed our way for Sunday. That should give north county SD some chest high sets and south SD shoulder high waves. We may have a weak cold front coming through so light S winds may be a problem. Get it early if you can. Water temps are running fast away from summer; most spots are 61-63 degrees. And the tides the next few days are 6' at sunrise, down to 0' at 2pm and back up to 4' at sunset. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves/weather at Twitter/North County Surf.

FORECAST:

The NW holds into Monday morning for waist to chest high sets in SD and not much for the OC. There was a little storm on the charts in the southern hemisphere a couple days ago which should send some waist high SW to the OC on Tuesday.
After that it's looking pretty flat around here. Models show some more NW taking shape off the Aleutians but we may not see that until late next weekend.
We actually have another tropical system taking shape off Mainland Mexico this morning but it may only hit tropical storm status and run into Baja- probably a long shot as a swell maker for us...

WEATHER:

Fantastic weather again. Look for sunny skies today and temps in the low 70's at the beaches. As advertised above, we have a weak cold front moving through on Sunday that may give us a small chance of showers Sunday night into Monday morning. After that, high pressure sets up for the middle of next week and we've got great weather on tap again.

BEST BET:
Sunday looks to be the day. Even though it may be a little cloudy with a chance of S wind, at least we'll have rideable waves.

NEWS OF THE WEEK:

Had a couple little storms the past few weeks to officially kick off our rainy season (July 1 to June 30). Our past rainy season was a dud, so where do we stand this season?
-Newport Beach: 0.13" so far. 12% of normal
-Oceanside: 0.44" so far. 37% of normal
-San Diego: 0.30" so far. 41% of normal
Basically we should be around 0.75"-1" so far this season. But it's still early and one good storm of 1/2" will bring us back close to where we should be. Oddly enough, it's about where we were last year- which only yielded 7.90" of rain (76% of normal). Most climatologists are saying we're in a neutral weather pattern this season- not La Nina and not El Nino- so hopefully we'll be average this season with 10" of rain when the rainy season officially ends next June 30th.

BEST OF THE BLOG:

Now that the holidays are approaching, it's time to be thankful for all we have. At the same time, we should be looking for ways to give back to things we love- like surfing. If you've heard of SurfAid but don't know much about their cause, now's the time; check out their story on the North County Surf blog. And of course a mid-week Surf Check and an in-depth THE Surf Report. All of that and more in the blog below!

PIC OF THE WEEK:

Went on a Hawaiian Holiday last week. Not that their tourism board needs any help or anything but the water temp was 81 over there. 81 for crying out loud! That's 20 degrees warmer than here. Man am I going to hate to put on my 3/2 this weekend. Maybe I'll be like Michael Ho at the Katin Team Challenge back in the 80's and wear my trunks. Classic- 58 degree water in Huntington in February. Awesome. Also won the Pipe Masters with a cast on his wrist. Double awesome.

Keep Surfing,
