When will the good weather ever end?
SURF:
Great weather a little surf the past few days.
Had some new NW swell start to creep up on Wednesday, fill in a little more yesterday, and is peaking today with chest high+ waves in town and head high+ sets in the best south SD spots.
We'll have a little leftover NW tomorrow with chest high sets and shoulder high sets in SD. Sunday looks to be pretty small.
Water temps are 58 and the tides next few days are about 5' at sunrise, down to 0' at lunch, and up to 3' at sunset. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves/weather at Twitter/North County Surf
FORECAST:
After a fun weekend of surf, we get a solid reinforcement from the NW Monday afternoon. Models show the swell hitting best in south SD with sets a few feet overhead but we should get some head high+ surf our way too. And yes- good weather is on tap again. As always. That lasts into Wednesday morning and then the 2nd half of next week looks a little small.
Charts though show another good storm setting up shop mid-week in the Aleutians and we should get more good NW towards the end of Sunday into Monday (i.e. the 19th/20th). We also have a small storm on the charts off Antarctica but I wouldn't hold my breath for any SW swell- just yet...
WEATHER:
Well the predicted showers last week never happened. Ever hear the joke "What job can you be wrong all the time and not get fired? Answer: A Weatherman". Well I know one thing for sure- we've got great weather for at least another week. Just some low clouds floating around in the early mornings this weekend then by Sunday afternoon high pressure fills in and we get a mild Santa Ana condition next week with continued sunny skies and warmer than normal weather- possibly in the high 70's at the beaches. Sounds good- but I'd like to turn my sprinklers off one of these days.
BEST BET:
If the models hold true- that solid NW Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning. And more great weather to boot.
NEWS OF THE WEEK:
Now I'm starting to worry. By now we should have had a couple good storms roll through our region but it's been unbelievably dry. Along with last winter's lower than average rainfall, it's starting to look bleak around here. Heck, even the Sierras look awful- and unfortunately that's where we get most of our water from. I had a quick look at Mammoth's snow pack this morning and so far they've had:
-October 10" of snow
-November 10.5"
-December 24"
Last year they also had a slow October/November but in December they got walloped with 147" of snow and made up quite the deficit. As far as our rainfall goes, we're about 20-30% of normal for southern California (less than 2" so far). The short term forecast for our region is a 40% chance of below normal rainfall through the next month. 3 months out (about mid spring) shows that chance dropping slightly to 30%. Basically it looks like we won't hit our seasonal average of 10". Again.
BEST OF THE BLOG:
North county San Diego has been a hotbed of action sports the past 20 years with companies like Nixon, Super, Reef, Blackbox, Rusty, Brixton, etc. setting up shop here as well as icons Tony Hawk and Shaun White calling this place home. But have you noticed all the pro surfers that have MOVED into town? And I'm not talking about the guys like Gerlach, Machado, and Taylor Knox that grew up here. I'm talking about guys leaving good surf in their hometowns to buy a place here- like Damien, Kerr, and Jordy. Not to mention Julian who hangs out with his brother about 9 months out of the year in Encinitas. See why on the North County Surf blog as well as a mid week Surf Check and an in-depth THE Surf Report. Right here in the blog below!
PIC OF THE WEEK:
Don't think the pros have got it good? Here's a pic to convince you: Empty Kerama's line up. Jet ski assistance. Pool and bar ON THE BEACH at the Komune resort. And more bikinis than you can shake a stick at. Now that I think about it, that was pretty much my Saturday last weekend. Forget what I said about the pros.
