North County Business News: Big Things From Little Cakes

Not to name drop or anything, but I've met some pretty famous people in my life. I've swam with Magic in Maui, hung with Chris Isaak backstage, watched hoops with Wooden, poured a couple for Aeorsmith, and countless others I can't mention due to pending restraining orders. But arguably the most important person I've met is the Food Network's 2 time Cupcake Wars winner Don Hein of Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen. Why the most important? Because there's a chance his cupcakes could bring about world peace. They're that good.

Don and his wife Becky were looking for something new to do after working in the corporate world for many years so in 2010 they decided to take a left turn and open Little Cakes Cupcake Kitchen in Vista. It wasn't too much of a stretch for Don as his DNA included bakeries in his family. 4 years later they're a staple of north county business and are busting at the seams.

There's an old philosophy in business that if you want to be successful, you focus on one thing and you do it right. Don could be serving breakfast, hamburgers, and brewing beer in his kitchen, but they just focus on cupcakes. And they happen to be the best. Don't believe me? Little Cakes Cupcakes Kitchen is the only 2 time winner of the Food Network's Cupcake Wars. Basically it's like winning the Nobel prize when it comes to dessert. The menu constantly revolves but if you're lucky you may run into flavors like Strawberry Lemonade, Pumpkin Mocha, Rosemary Olive, The 'Tuxedo' (chocolate cake dipped in white chocolate ganache, topped with vanilla buttercream and crispy chocolate pearls), and my favorite, Apple French Toast, which basically tastes what it sounds like.
If you happen to be taking the groms to The Wave this summer or doing the brewery crawl in Vista- or maybe you just need that late night cupcake fix- head on over to suite 180 on 30 Main Street. And they cater too in case you need hundreds of 'em. Give Don and Becky a call at (760) 842-5138. Hours are Sunday-Thursday 11am-8pm and Friday/Saturday 11am-9pm. Make sure to ask for Don's autograph.
