Surf Check 10/11/11

Got a little surf today from the S and NW with waist high waves around town and some chest high sets towards the OC. Nothing big but the beachbreaks at high tide this morning had some little wedges. Considering the fog is burning off and the sun is out, it looks fun for a fatter board. As far as red tide goes, most beaches look a lot cleaner but there's still some odd pockets here and there. Best bet is to just run north and south if you're checking the surf and it's red tide straight out- most likely you'll find some cleaner water nearby.

Tides are about 6' at 9AM, 0' at 4PM, and back up to 2' at sunset. Water temps are hovering around 63.

High pressure is slowly strengthening through tomorrow and it's battling the fog at the coast. Look for the morning sessions to be socked in with low clouds then hazy sunshine in the afternoon with temps near 80 today. Then high pressure strengthens a little bit stronger tomorrow and the beaches may see 90's! Finally some beach weather! That should last through Thursday then slowly cool off towards the weekend.

Forecast charts show some NW headed our way from the Aleutians that should arrive tomorrow afternoon and last through Thursday. Chest high sets look to be the norm for north county SD and north county OC and some head high sets in south county SD. Waist high waves will be likely in south OC. We also had a little activity in the southern hemisphere last week that should send some S towards Thursday. Nothing big but the OC should have some shoulder high sets and make up for the NW they'll be missing on Wednesday.
As far as the tropics go, we actually have two storms off Mexico and a third trying to form. Unfortunately Irwin only has 40mph winds and is headed east- away from our swell window. Jova is slightly better with 100mph winds but it's about ready to slam Mainland Mexico- and not in our swell window. The third area of clouds (shaded in yellow) has been hanging around the past 5 days and hasn't organized much- I don't expect much out of it.

Long story short- we've got great weather on Wednesday and Thursday. With the NW arriving tomorrow, best bet is to hit SD. With the SW showing Thursday, the OC seems to be the call. And if you live in north county SD, it will be slightly smaller here but Wednesday and Thursday should be rideable with combo peaks. Get on it!
