Surf Check 7/10/12

All kinds of activity in the Tropics today and nothing from the southern or northern hemispheres. Kind of cool- when one area of the Pacific goes quiet, another one fills in to keep us in surf! Mighty nice of them.

Today we have a little S swell from former Hurricane Daniel and a touch of tiny NW windswell and SW groundswell. Best spots in far north county SD and the OC are chest high. I'm pretty sure- kind of hard to tell with the fog this morning. That should start to burn off though by mid-morning. Wind is light and variable but will probably blow from the W again today around 10mph. Looks like we have a little breather the next couple of days from the surf then Major Hurricane Emelia shows up towards Friday.

Currently Emelia is peaking with 140mph winds, moving WNW at 10 knots, and is looking impressive on the radar. Good news is that she's a sizeable storm. Bad news is that she isn't moving N towards us nor moving particulary slow. Regardless, we should get some shoulder high seets in far north SD late Friday and head high+ sets in the OC; that lasts into Saturday. Summer is right on schedule. Now if we can just do something about the water temps- they've been all over the place the last few days. Anywhere from 63 to 68. If you're beach is 63 and you're dawn patrolling it, you're wearing a fullsuit. If you're beach is 68 and the sun is out in the afternoon, you're wearing a jacket. Kind of confusing.

Tides the next few days are 2' at sunrise, down slightly to 1' mid-morning, up to 5' late afternoon, and down to 3' at sunset.

This morning we've got dense fog but it's starting to lift. We should have sun by mid-morning at the beaches and temps in mid-70's. Death Valley on the otherhand is forecasted to be 125 today. Yes, you read that right. 125 deadly degrees- hence the name 'Death' Valley. 99 years ago today, Death Valley reached 134 degrees- the hottest temp in North America ever (some place in the mid-East beat it out a few years later with 136 degrees- crazy). We even have a couple monsoon clouds floating overhead- if you can see them through the fog. We should have nice weather the remainder of the week with temps climbing a couple degrees towards Friday then cooling off this weekend slightly.

After Emelia's surf winds down this weekend, we have another hurricane trying to form on it's heels. If everything comes together, we may get fun surf again the middle of next week. The southern hemisphere is trying to organize but unfortunately the storms have been moving east to west and not directing swell towards the north and ultimately us. We may get a little chest high surf though towards next weekend from a little activity shown in the map above. Long story short, thank Neptune for the recent run of hurricanes.
