Surf Check 10/2/12

Great weekend of surf has spilled into a great work week of surf. Today we had more head high sets around town from the SW with a touch of NW to break up the lines. And not much wind to boot.
Good news is that the southern hemi storm that sent us the SW this weekend held together for a few days so we have more SW for at least the next couple of days. Charts also show the small NW windswell sticking around so we should at least get some corners out there. Water is still a pleasant 70 degrees (not bad for the 1st week of October) and tides the next few days are about 2' at sunrise (6:45 am) then up to 5.5' at 10:30 am and down to 0' at sunset (6:30 pm).
Our weather will start to cool down the next few days unfortunately. It is fall, isn't it? Look for more extensive low clouds/fog in the nights/mornings and temps about 10 degrees cooler than they have been (no big deal- we'll be at 75 degrees finally). Of note is a storm forecasted to take shape over the weekend out in the north Pacific. Some models have it giving us a little rain on Tuesday- other models keep it towards northern California and then a weaker version would dive down towards us on Thursday. Regardless, we normally get our first 'storm' of the year around mid-October so I wouldn't be surprised if we got some light rain next week. Or at least some cooler weather and a little breeze.
As far as the surf goes, we'll have some leftover SW this upcoming weekend for chest high waves (and maybe a better set in the OC). Then early next week that 'storm' I mentioned above may give us a shot of fun shoulder high NW towards 10/12.
There's also a solid storm trying to form under New Zealand around 10/6 but it's getting split by that big island. Models show it breaking apart shortly there after. If we do get some surf from it, expect inconsistent head high sets in the OC towards 10/14.
And the tropics aren't completely dead yet, as evident by tonight's satellite photo. We have a group of clouds of mainland Mex trying to form. If anything does happen, it will probably be towards this weekend then a swell a couple days after that. Hopefully we'd see S swell by Monday the 8th.

Long story short- get the fun SW swell the next few days while the weather still feels like summer!
