On your way to the surf the past week you probaby noticed all the street work going on at the intersection of Leucadia Blvd. and Highway 101. Most noticeably the sidewalks around the train tracks. The City has begun the planned improvements to the Leucadia Streetscrape project. The Leucadia Mainstreet Association says:
"Phase I : ADA ramp improvements at the railroad crossing area. (This work looks to be completed).
Phase II will consist of sidewalk improvements in front of Leucadia Roadside Park (which happens to be across from the tracks- down the road from Beacons. This work looks to be completed too).
Phase III will be some limited landscaping...yes plants... in the railroad right-of-way at the railroad crossing area. (This is much needed as the railroad crossing area has always looked like junk. Hopefully it will have some traits like the landscaping at the Chesterfield crossing in Cardiff).
Also during the coming months, Highway 101 will be prepared for resurfacing with white mark outs, and new interim sidewalks and/or asphalt repair with white striping of pedestrian walkways, will be installed in the north end of Hwy 101 beginning at the Leucadia Creek Apartments south to Jupiter Street.
In late September/early October, the new "101 trees" will be planted with irrigation in the medians at the north end of Hwy 101 and a few planted in the City's right-of-way on the east side of Hwy 101 near the La Costa intersection. This is part of the early Phase I of the Hwy 101 streetscape.
Looks some big (good) changes are underway for Leucadia and the merchants. It should bring an influx of cash to the businesses the way the downtown Encinitas streetscape did. Now if we can just fix that flooding problem during the rainy season...
