THE Surf Report 11/4/11

Storm’s a comin’!

SURF:
Had some beautiful weather earlier this week with some small surf early on. Luckily the NW and SW picked up slightly and most beaches had chest high waves. Then the clouds came in last night, the south wind picked up, and the storm surf came along with it.

Today we have junky south winds around 10mph and a building NW windswell with fun SW underneath. Most beaches are chest high+ and blown and it’s getting worse. Complete waste of 2 swells. Saturday the storm exits and we’re left with lumpy head high+ NW swell (bigger in south county SD), peaking shoulder high SW and blowing NW winds. Maybe if the weather cleans up enough Saturday afternoon, there might be some fun combo conditions. Right on it’s heels is a weaker storm Sunday afternoon so hopefully there will be a little rideable window Sunday morning too. Overall it’s going to be hit and miss all weekend with a heavy emphasis on ‘miss’. Shouldn’t be a shocker as we’re getting closer to winter.

Tides the next few days are 5’ at sunrise, 1’ at lunch, and 4’ at sunset. Water temps are 60. Make sure to keep up to date on the waves and weather at North County Surf/Twitter.

FORECAST:
After the junk exits this weekend we get a little boost from the NW again on Monday. Should be shoulder high sets in north SD/north OC and some head high sets in south SD. South OC is left with small background SW for chest high sets.

Mid-week looks small then models show a solid W setting up shop towards late Thursday. We might be in overhead surf for the weekend. Let’s just hope the weather holds up. As far as the south Pacific goes, it's pretty dead down there. Get this weekend's S while you can!

WEATHER:

As advertised above, we’re due for a little weather this weekend. Today we’ve got showers overhead and increasing winds- first from the south then turning NW by tomorrow morning. Shouldn’t get a lot of rain today- maybe a ¼”- but the real story will be the cold and wind. Temps will only top out in the low 60’s this weekend while the winds will blow around 25mph. We may even get a dusting of snow in the local mountains above 5000’. Saturday we have sunny skies but cold temps again and breezy northwest winds in the AM. Sunday morning starts off nice but then we get a weak front Sunday afternoon. For the workweek, models are all over the place. Looks like Monday-Thursday may be nice with sunny skies and cool temps but high pressure may or not hold late week as another front tries to make it’s way to our region by Friday. If it’s stronger than anticipated, we’ll get another weak front with light showers and breezy conditions towards the weekend. If it’s weaker than expected, high pressure will hold and we’ll get a continuation of nice weather. I guess there’s only one way to find out- just wait for Friday to get here.

BEST BET:
Tough one here. If the models hold correct, then maybe late Saturday/early Sunday with some leftover dropping NW and fun SW along with clean conditions. Or better conditions Monday and a new smaller NW and a touch of small SW. OR… if the weather cooperates next Friday, it would be good to see that new head high+ W with clean conditions. Regardless, there should be some surf- you just have to find an area protected from the weather.

NEWS OF THE WEEK:
Daylight Saving Time is here! Daylight Saving Time is here! It’s my favorite holiday of the year. Forget kids all jacked up on chocolate for Halloween or people getting crushed at Black Friday sales for X-mas, Daylight Saving Time is the holiday I look forward to the most. Why? What other holiday do you get an extra hour of sleep? That’s right- none! It’s the best gift of all! No more uneatable fruit cakes, sweaters from Grandma, or gift cards at Hollister- it’s an extra hour on my life that I really need. So don’t forget to set your clocks back 1 hour when you go to bed this Saturday night (it actually kicks in at 2AM on Sunday in case you have insomnia and were curious). Now you can dawn patrol before work (sun comes up at 6am now) but no more sessions after work (sun goes down at 5pm- but I’m too tired anyway to paddle out after working all day at the quarry). On the flipside, I absolutely HATE Daylight Saving Time. WHAT you ask?! Well I lose a precious hour of beauty sleep in the spring- and man do I need my beauty sleep. Guess I can’t have my cake and eat it too.

BEST OF THE BLOG:
In case you’re up all night on Saturday waiting for Daylight Saving Time to kick in, make sure to catch up on your reading at the North County Surf blog. This week we’ve got stories on the impending Pandora’s Pizza in Leucadia along with the long awaited Coffee Coffee next to Surfy Surfy opening up today (man that’s a tongue twister) as well as the Tuesday Surf Check and some damn fine work by Mick Fanning in Indo. All of that and more in the blog below!

PIC OF THE WEEK:

Does it get any better than this? A pumping right pointbreak, warm water to try those new trunks out in, bikinis as far as the eye can see, a minimal Tuesday mid-day crowd, and a penthouse suite overlooking your home break. No wonder Australians are such good surfers- they’ve got it all. Except Slater. And Curren! Ha- take that Occy!

Keep Surfing,
